The value of life

 Welcome to Called With Purpose

Today we begin a series born from a question that every one of us has asked at some point in life:

How much is a human life really worth?

We live in a world that measures value by money, appearance, fame, or success. But God has never measured a life that way.

Today we begin a journey from Genesis to Revelation to discover the true value of a life in the eyes of its Creator.

SERIES: THE VALUE OF A LIFE

EPISODE 1

Before You Existed, You Already Had Value

Key Scripture: Genesis 1:26–27

"Then God said, 'Let Us make mankind in Our image, according to Our likeness...'"(Genesis 1:26)

Introduction

We live in a world that constantly tries to define a person's worth by what they own, how they look, what profession they have, how many followers they have, or what they can produce. Many people grow up believing they have little value because they have been rejected, wounded, or looked down upon.

But the Bible presents an entirely different truth.

Before sin existed...

Before suffering entered the world...

Before the first family was born...

Before humanity even took its very first breath...

God had already decided to give human life extraordinary value.

The value of your life did not begin the day you were born.

It began when God chose to create you.

The Universe Reveals God's Power

When we open the book of Genesis, we discover an incredible detail.

For six days God formed the entire universe.

He said,

"Let there be light."

And there was light.

He separated the waters.

He formed the heavens.

He created the earth.

He filled the seas with fish.

He filled the sky with birds.

He created every kind of animal.

And after each act of creation, the Bible says,

"And God saw that it was good."

Everything was beautiful.

Everything was perfect.

Yet something was still missing.

Creation was ready...

But the one for whom everything had been prepared did not yet exist.

Then Something Extraordinary Happened

For the very first time in the entire creation account, God does not simply say,

"Let there be..."

Instead, God speaks within Himself.

"Let Us make mankind in Our image, according to Our likeness."

Why the change?

Because humanity would not be just another creature.

Human beings would be the only part of creation designed to reflect the character of their Creator.

We were not created to resemble the animals.

We were not created to resemble the angels.

We were created to reflect God.

That is where the true value of a human life begins.

Your Value Is Not Found in What You Do

Many people spend their entire lives trying to prove they are valuable.

They think,

"When I have enough money..."

"When I graduate..."

"When I get married..."

"When I become successful..."

"When people finally accept me..."*

"Then I will have value."

But God works in exactly the opposite way.

First, He gives you value.

Then, He gives you purpose.

We do not work to gain value.

We work because we are already valuable in God's eyes.

God Never Created Trash

The world may label you.

It may reject you.

It may judge you.

It may compare you.

It may humiliate you.

But your Creator has never called worthless what He lovingly created with His own hands.

Perhaps others told you that you would never amount to anything.

Perhaps you grew up hearing words of rejection.

Perhaps you have made mistakes that still weigh heavily on your heart today.

But none of those things has the authority to redefine the value that God placed on your life from the very beginning.

The Image of God

Being created in the image and likeness of God does not mean that God has a human body.

It means that we were created to reflect aspects of His character—to love, to reason, to create, to serve, to exercise responsible stewardship, to live in fellowship, and to walk in holiness.

That divine design sets us apart from all the rest of creation.

Therefore, whenever a human life is despised, the dignity that God Himself bestowed upon that life is also being despised.

A Truth That Changes Everything

Before you took your very first step...

God was already thinking about you.

Before you spoke your very first word...

God already knew you.

Before your very first achievement...

You were already precious to Him.

Not because you had earned it.

But because He chose to create you.

That is the foundation of the entire Bible.

And that is why God never stopped pursuing humanity, even after the Fall.

Reflection

Your value does not depend on your past.

It does not depend on your family name.

It does not depend on your bank account.

It does not depend on your failures.

Your value depends on the One who said,

"Let Us make mankind..."

And when God decided to create you, He was not improvising.

He was beginning a story of love, purpose, and redemption that would reach its glorious climax centuries later at the cross of Christ.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You because my value does not depend on what the world thinks of me, but on what You declared from the very beginning. Thank You for creating me with purpose, for making me in Your image, and for giving me a dignity that no one can take away. Help me to live each day remembering that I am the work of Your hands and that my life carries an eternal purpose.

In the name of Jesus,

Amen.

THE VALUE OF A LIFE

Episode 2

The Creator's Hands: Why Did God Form Man from the Dust?

Key Text: Genesis 2:7

"Then the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being." (NIV)

Introduction

In the first episode, we discovered that our value began before we were ever born. Before humanity existed, God had already chosen to create mankind in His image.

Now Genesis brings us closer to one of the most intimate moments in all of Scripture.

God does something He had not done with the rest of creation.

He doesn't simply speak.

He forms.

He shapes.

He creates with intention.

Why?

Because human life was never meant to be ordinary.

The Creator Who Works with His Hands

Throughout Genesis chapter 1, God creates by His word.

"Let there be light."

"Let the earth produce."

"Let the waters teem with living creatures."

Everything comes into existence at His command.

But when God creates humanity, the language changes.

Genesis tells us that God formed man from the dust of the ground.

This is the image of a master craftsman shaping something precious with care and purpose.

The Bible is revealing something profound:

Humanity was not an afterthought.

Humanity was personally fashioned by its Creator.

Dust... Yet Precious

At first glance, dust seems insignificant.

We sweep it away.

We step on it without noticing.

Yet God chose something humble to demonstrate an extraordinary truth.

Our worth does not come from the material we were made from.

Our worth comes from the One who made us.

A priceless sculpture is not valuable because of the clay.

It is valuable because of the artist.

The same is true of every human life.

Reflection

You may feel ordinary.

You may believe your past defines you.

You may think your failures have diminished your value.

But remember this:

The hands that formed Adam are the same hands that know every detail of your life.

The God who shaped humanity with purpose still sees immeasurable worth in every person He has created.

Prayer

Father, thank You for forming me with wisdom, purpose, and love. Help me to remember that my value does not come from my achievements or failures, but from the fact that I am the work of Your hands. Teach me to see myself—and others—the way You do. In Jesus' name, Amen.
